The Charleston Tri-County area is made up of four public school districts:
Charleston County School District (CCSD) is the second largest school system in South Carolina representing a unique blend of urban, suburban, and rural schools that span 1,000 square miles of coastal lands. CCSD serves approximately 44,000 students in 80 schools and several specialized programs. CCSD offers a diverse, expanding portfolio of options-including neighborhood, charter, and magnet schools-and is divided into elementary, secondary, and “Innovation Zone” learning communities, each led by an associate superintendent. With approximately 5,500 employees district-wide, CCSD is the fourth largest employer in the region.
Berkeley County School District, the fourth largest school system in the state, currently serves over 29,000 students and operates 40 schools (22 elementary/intermediate schools, 9 middle schools, 8 high schools, and 1 alternative school). The district boasts one of the most accredited instructional teams in the state, with over 59% of the certified staff holding advanced degrees, and an average of 13 years of teaching experience.

Dorchester District II is an award-winning school system that is one of the fastest growing districts in the state, with student enrollment reaching 23,000. There are 11 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, and 3 high schools that serve the suburban community of Summerville. They also offer a comprehensive Adult Education program, along with an alternative program for middle and high school students. Dorchester District II is one of a few select districts in the state and nation to achieve district-wide accreditation as a quality school system by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
